Root Canal Therapy Q & A

What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy involves a procedure your provider performs to remove decayed tissue or infection from the inside of your tooth (pulp). They then fill and seal the tooth. This prevents tooth extraction and restores your natural tooth.

Saving a natural tooth with root canal therapy has advantages, including:

  • Efficient chewing
  • Normal biting force and sensation
  • Natural appearance
  • Protection for your teeth from excessive wear or strain

Rest assured, at Dorri’s Dental, a root canal specialist (endodontist) on the team ensures that you’re comfortable during a root canal procedure and that you experience no pain.

When do I need root canal therapy?

The Dorri’s Dental team may recommend a root canal if you’re experiencing:

  • Severe toothache
  • Tenderness in your teeth or gums
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Darkening of your gums
  • Oral pain or swelling
  • Pus or pimple near your gumline
  • Pain when chewing
  • Pain in your face or jaw

It’s crucial to seek immediate care if you’re experiencing symptoms of a root canal. Dorri’s Dental offers same-day emergency dental root canals.

What happens during root canal therapy?

Before proceeding with a root canal, your provider conducts a thorough evaluation of your symptoms and medical history and takes dental X-rays. Once they determine you need the procedure, they develop an individualized treatment plan.

During a root canal, your provider numbs the treatment area, and you may choose sedation to calm you. Dorri’s Dental offers nitrous oxide or “laughing gas” to help you feel relaxed.

Your provider thoroughly numbs the area around the tooth so you feel no pain. A root canal will be like any other dental procedure, such as a filling.

Your provider then removes the infected pulp from the inside of your tooth. After they clean and disinfect your tooth, they fill the empty root canal area and seal your tooth closed. To further protect your tooth, your provider may recommend getting a crown over the top of it.

After root canal therapy, you can expect your tooth and mouth to be tender or sore for a few days, and you should avoid hard food or candy.

Continue to keep up a good oral hygiene regimen and come into the office for routine cleanings twice a year.
